First You Must Fail

“The down cycle is absolutely essential for spiritual realization. You must have failed deeply on some level or experienced some deep loss or pain to be drawn to the spiritual dimension.” – Ekhart Tolle

“Mistakes are the portals to discovery” -James Joyce

You need to fail before you can realise that whatever it was you were relying on for happiness will never last. What goes up will always come down.

If you take drugs you will feel high, but then it won’t be too long until you are back to normal or worse, and no closer to the state of euphoria you were just in.

If you find a partner who you like and you start seeing each other, it won’t be long until the initial ‘honeymoon period’ dies down. As soon as things are not quite as rosey as they first were, problems can start to arise. Eventually if you break up, you will feel devastated when you no longer get that feeling you used to have.

If you find what you think is the perfect job, sooner or later you will find something to complain about- maybe you will want more free time or some sort of change.

The point is, we can go on our whole lives being defined by these ups and downs, or we can try to bring in a higher level of consciousness during. We can live completely defined by the things that happen to us, or we can try to find the peace underneath it all.

“Surrender becomes so much easier when you realize the fleeting nature of all experiences and that the world cannot give you anything of lasting value. You then continue to meet people, to be involved in experiences and activities, but without the wants and fears of the egoic self. That is to say, you no longer demand that a situation, person, place, or event should satisfy you or make you happy. Its passing and imperfect nature is allowed to be. ”  – Ekhart Tolle

How to surrender? Constant observation of your own mind will remind you that you are more than just the thoughts going around in your head. That will allow you to eventually surrender into it all, in a state where you don’t have inner resistance to life . This is the solution- but it won’t be so easy when you have been identified with your thoughts for your whole life. Good luck.
